A 1971 Fender Jazz Bass found by accident, after almost twenty years gathering dust in a Palace of Culture in a small Belarusian town.
Recorded in a completely different way from the first guitar in the series: only two sound lines, but neither of them simple — and the unusual thing found in a bass guitar here is its tenderness.
At a Glance
- Three articulations sustain, mute and harmonics
- Two sound lines a clean chain and a pedal chain
- The sustain recorded so the instrument can whisper rather than talk, without losing a confident voice
- The mute more daring — funky, or bass for slow experimental music
- The harmonics many velocity layers, for a flexible and soft sound
- The X patches passed through a cassette machine three or four times, to move from the 70s back to the 60s or 50s
Content & Detail
A bass that whispers is harder to sample than one that shouts, because every quiet note exposes what the chain did to it. Two lines and six repetitions per note are what let this one stay quiet without going flat.
