Tish is a concert vibraphone that spent decades in a European opera house, brought into the studio and recorded in an intimate setting with one musician.

Despite that history it speaks in a quiet, introspective tone — recorded extremely softly through eight microphones, mostly ribbon and tube, with up to five velocity layers and eight round robins.

At a Glance

  • 5 presets Sustains, Mutes, Bowed, Tape Sustains and Prepared — the field states five and names five
  • Four layers per preset each preset carries its own X-slider, blending four designed layers against the original tone
  • Eight microphones, four sliders the field states eight mics, and four sliders controlling each mic type’s volume, each with its own panning slider
  • Played quietly on purpose in the Sustains, the field says, even the loudest dynamic was performed softly and caught with high gain through tube preamps
  • Sources past the vibraphone rare synths, oscillators and test equipment feed the designed layers, all of them built on the original tone
  • 5.5 GB compressed 7.6 GB uncompressed, as the field states

Content & Detail

01The Five Presetsnamed and counted
SustainsTwo styles, soft mallets and wooden sticks. The X-slider side adds randomly played octaves, which the field singles out for chords
MutesShort muted notes in two versions, soft mallets and wooden sticks. One design layer is synthesised through a tube oscillator modulated by the vibraphone itself; another is a cassette version captured repeatedly at reduced speed on an old Japanese tape recorder
BowedPlayed with a cello bow, two velocity layers — short and wavy when soft, longer and more intense when loud. The X-slider layers imitate the bowed tone with oscillators, LFOs and function generators, some running fast enough to produce musical tones that were then sampled
Tape SustainsRecorded to reel-to-reel machines in two versions: Type I at half speed through tube compressors and EQs, Type II at what the field calls double-half speed for a more degraded character. The X-slider carries multiphonics bowed on the vibraphone tubes, and a tremolo whose per-note playback speed varies by round robin
PreparedObjects laid on each note and left to vibrate from the mallet strike. Each of the 8 round robins uses a different object; the field names four of them — coins, paper, foil and wood. The X-slider adds fast accented tremolo and a version of it run through tape delays, loopers and pitch shifters
The countThe field says 5 presets in one place, 5 patches in another and 5 variations of the main sound in its feature list. Those five are the five named above
02How It Was Recordedthe room and the gear
The instrumentA vibraphone that spent decades in a European opera house, which the field does not name, filling grand halls before it was moved to the studio
Microphones8, mostly ribbon and tube
DynamicsUp to 5 velocity layers per note and 8 round robins
PreampsVarious tube preamps at high gain — a detail the field gives inside its Sustains section
Tape machinesStuder, Telefunken and Uher reel-to-reel machines for the Tape Sustains, and an old Japanese cassette recorder for one of the Mutes layers
Design sourcesRare synths, oscillators and test equipment — every designed layer built on the original vibraphone tone
03The PanelsSource · FX · Movement · Master
SourceFour sliders controlling each mic type’s volume, each with its own panning slider — the field’s own wording. Five patches, each blending four extra sound layers against the original through the X-slider
FXThe list runs to five entries: Vibrato for small periodic pitch changes, Warm for rich nonlinear distortion, Tremolo for subtle amplitude modulation, Echo and Reverb sharing one entry, and a fifth entry describing the Master section
MovementA 12-step sequencer the field calls highly customisable, plus two LFO modules, all connectable to the key elements
MasterTwo vintage octave filters splitting the signal into 10 and 16 bands, a three-band shelving EQ with adjustable crossover frequencies, and controls for pitch, noise level and output
One disagreementThe FX list describes the Master as having a filter and a shelving EQ; the Master section describes two octave filters and a three-band shelving EQ. Both statements are the vendor’s and both are printed here
04Requirements and Sizeas stated

Sample rate and bit depthThis field states neither figure

A vibraphone recorded loudly is a percussion instrument; recorded this softly it becomes a breath. That is the whole argument of this library — a quiet performance, then four designed layers per preset sitting on a slider so the player decides how far from the room to travel.
