Europe is a crowded continent, and the point of this library is the places where that is still not audible.

Once the snow has melted the whole continent starts singing at once — birds, frogs, rain across a field of mustard seed, a river coming down a valley in Kerry. Recorded in full 360° on a Schoeps ORTF3D rig, so the ambience can be built as 3D Surround or as plain stereo from the same session.

At a Glance

  • 118 files in the 3D set 236 in all once the included stereo version is counted — the two figures add up exactly
  • 91+ GB, or 113+ GB with stereo 91 + 22 = 113, so that pair adds up too
  • Schoeps ORTF3D Surround Set eight channels, four low and four high
  • Stereo is included, not sold apart same content, same production-ready formats, in the box with the 3D set
  • European, not American a temperate palette against the far more diverse one of the previous, US-recorded Spring
  • The farmsteads are labelled the field admits a very occasional sheep bleat and says it is marked in the metadata

02Where It Was Recordedand what spring sounds like there
Kerry, IrelandA river roaring down the mountainside of the valleys
The Black ForestField crickets that sing only in spring
Swedish wetlandsMigratory birds that range across continents and breed in the North
A German forestThe early morning, which the field describes by its smell as much as its sound
Highlands and fieldsWind howling through the high ground, light rain drumming on mustard seed
The methodRecordists working with diligence and patience to find landscapes that still sound untouched
03European Against Americanwhat the difference actually is
The previous libraryThe earlier SEASONS OF EARTH – SPRING, recorded throughout the United States
The difference statedEurope is much more temperate; the United States carries a much more diverse palette
What is here insteadDifferent birds, frogs and other wildlife, captured in the European temperate range
Why record it twiceA dawn chorus is a local accent; a European scene scored with American birds is wrong in a way the audience feels without naming
Honest about peopleA few settled landscapes and farmsteads appear, with a very occasional sheep bleat, and it is labelled

Times of dayDawn, morning, dusk and night, each carrying a different cast

An ambience is the one recording that cannot be assembled afterwards. A dawn chorus is hundreds of animals agreeing on a moment, and no amount of layering reproduces it — which is why the work here was travel and patience rather than processing.
