15 cannons, from bombards to 30-pounders96 kHz WAV, 24 bit26-channel multitrack in the Construction Kit

Cannons defined every battlefield for four centuries, and until this library there was no complete recording of one.

Fort-smashing bombards, high-angled mortars, 16-pounder frigate loads — the blasts, the mechanical action, the flybys and the impacts on everything from water to sail. It covers late medieval to early modern action, and it will also give a trailer or a plain explosion a great deal more weight.

At a Glance

  • 15 cannons counted off the field’s own list, which agrees with its stated 15
  • 26-channel multitrack the point of view can be placed almost anywhere in relation to the gun
  • Replicas on purpose original-period barrels would have warped steel and the wrong sound
  • Blast, mechanics, flyby, impact the whole event, not only the bang
  • 11 impact materials named wood, metal, concrete, rock, stone, sail, water, dirt, sand, cloth and debris
  • 96 kHz WAV, 24 bit Windows and Mac, in every edition

03How It Was Recordedlocations, array and the replica decision
The locationsA military base and an archery range, both hillside, for the natural reverb tails
Why a tailFor most sounds a dry recording is safer; for a cannon the tail is what makes it read as real
The arrayShotgun through omnidirectional mics in AB, XY and ORTF, plus Ambisonics and ORTF 3D spatial setups
The far micA Sennheiser AMBEO VR Mic captured the sound from 100 metres away
Replicas, not originalsAccurate-to-the-era replicas were used deliberately: an original barrel means warped steel and a wrong sound
Construction Kit variations8 for each cannon, across a range of sizes and types
Sculpting it yourselfBoost the mics that caught the mechanics for a closer read, or reach for the 100-metre AMBEO for distance
04The Five Designed Setssix variations in each
DistantCannons blasting somewhere far off, through the smoke
MechanicA cannon moves and rocks when it fires; this set keeps all of that motion
CrispProcessed to be more in-your-face than realistic — for trailers and experiments
LoudThe same shot with an extra boost of volume
SoftFor when dialogue has to sit over the cannons
How they are builtFive sets covering all 15 cannons, six variations in each, mixed from combinations of the 26-channel array

The reason to use a replica is the same reason to record outdoors. A warped original barrel and a dry studio both produce a cannon that no listener has ever heard — accuracy here is a matter of choosing what to reproduce, not of reaching for the oldest object in the room.
