Mongolian Voices – Ancient Phrases is a live-recorded vocal instrument built on traditional Mongolian singing, divided into three categories: Female, Male and Male Throat.
The Female and Male parts are Urtiin duu — the long song, which the field describes as a 2,000-year-old form sung at festivals and events. The third category is Mongol Khoomei, the throat singing that relies on guttural vibrations and circular breathing and can sound 2 or 3 notes at the same time.
At a Glance
- 621 phrases in 17 themes as the field states it, alongside a separate figure of 51 samples per theme
- Three categories Female, Male and Male Throat — the opening paragraph calls the third one simply Throat
- Three vocalists Ashit Nergui, Erdenetsetseg Khenmedekh and Munkhbaatar Bat-Ulzii, all three named in the field
- Four microphones named Neumann M149, U87 and KM184, and a Sennheiser MD421
- Three effects on the FX page EQ, delay and reverb
- Outside Western theory the field says the vocals sit technically in a major key but do not feel that way, and that they work with other modes as well
Content & Detail
A long song is built to be held, not cut. That is why this library is a roster before it is a sample count: three named singers, four named microphones, and phrases left at the length the tradition gives them. The 621 is inventory; the three names are the instrument.
