Chroma – Upright Piano is one instrument sampled deeply: a hundred-year-old Wilhelm Diemer upright from a small Würzburg workshop, restored with new strings, felts and mechanics, then recorded from four positions.

The team went to that studio to record a grand piano. The upright standing in the same room is what they came away with — and the engine both reproduces its sonority and pulls it apart into abstract soundscapes.

At a Glance

  • 27 velocity layers for the normal piano sound, and 8 round robins for the mechanical sounds
  • 4 mic positions FRONT, ABOVE, BELOW and RUMBLE, freely adjustable
  • Five articulations named felt, muted, plucked, flageolet and bowed; the field says “including”, so the list is open
  • 91 presets the intro list says 91, the key features say over 90 — both figures are the vendor’s
  • Mechanical detail Note On, Note Off and Pedal sounds available as their own layer
  • Two microphones named close Coles 4038s and spaced Neumann km140s; the field says other mic pairs were used and does not name them

Content & Detail

01The Piano and the Recordingone instrument
The instrumentA Wilhelm Diemer upright, about a hundred years old, from a small workshop in Würzburg, Germany
RestorationNew strings, felts and mechanics, done by a professional; the field says the tuning holds and the vintage character was kept
Mic positionsFRONT, ABOVE, BELOW and RUMBLE — four, freely adjustable
MicrophonesClose Coles 4038s and spaced Neumann km140s are the two the field names; it refers to other mic pairs without naming them
Depth27 velocity layers for the piano sound, 8 round robins for every mechanical sound
ArticulationsFelt, muted, plucked, flageolet and bowed, plus Note On, Note Off and Pedal control sounds
02Engine, Presets and Requirementsas stated
Core engineFull mod wheel support; the field says the engine is inspired by Sonuscore’s Time Textures
EnhancementsOctave pitch control, detailed effect swap, and advanced mic mixing
Presets91 in the intro list, over 90 in the key features; the field carries both
CompanionThe field names Chroma – Grand Piano as the companion instrument, a different sound from the same series
HostWorks with the free Kontakt Player; Kontakt 7.10.4 or higher
SystemmacOS 10.15 or higher, or Windows 10 or higher; 8 GB RAM, more recommended; at least 17 GB of free disk space, SSD recommended; some presets need an Intel i7 or higher

An upright is not a smaller grand; it is a different instrument with a different job in a mix. The field’s own argument for this one is placement rather than rank: its soundboard resonance sits under intimate writing, and it asks for less corrective EQ there than a grand does.
